Many former Manchester United players have pursued a career in coaching after their playing career was over.

Only July 11 2024, Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as assistant manager under Erik ten Hag.

Recently, Michael Carrick, Nicky Butt, Kieran McKenna and Darren Fletcher all worked as coaches at United.

They were all at the club during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as manager.

This week, Birmingham City have announced that Tom Huddlestone will become their new assistant manager.

The 37-year-old will replace former Chelsea and Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole.

Huddlestone has previously been involved in United’s academy as both a player and coach.

However, he never made a senior appearance for the club and was primarily utilised as a player-manager for the under-21 team.

On June 5 2024, Huddlestone announced his retirement from football and began his transition into full-time coaching.

Since his departure from United, the former midfielder joined the interim backroom staff with England’s under-21s.

Huddlestone will continue in this role, while simultaneously working at Birmingham.

Birmingham manager Chris Davies expressed his excitement about Huddlestone’s appointment as assistant manager.

“Tom is an excellent coach and a great addition to our first team staff as we look to build on our start to the 2024/2025 season.”

“He has vast playing experience, which has been added to by coaching roles he has held with club and international teams”, he said.

After Huddlestone left United in June, he voiced his gratitude to the club for helping him in his career.

“Over the past two seasons, I have experienced remarkable growth and invaluable learning, both on and off the pitch”, he said.

With his experience at United, Huddlestone will certainly be well-equipped to deal with the challenges as an assistant manager.
