Manchester United’s hopes of salvaging their season rest heavily on success in the Europa League – a competition that now represents their only route back into the Champions League.

After an inconsistent domestic campaign, Ruben Amorim has turned his full focus to continental glory, with United gearing up for a high-stakes semi-final first leg against Athletic Club in Bilbao on Thursday night.

With the pressure mounting, Amorim has made it clear that winning the Europa League is vital to restoring belief at the club and bringing European nights back to Old Trafford next season.

His squad has already navigated tricky knockout ties, and another stern test awaits at San Mames, where the Basque side have been formidable this season.

Ahead of the clash, Manchester United have officially named their 26-man squad, with two important players making a return from injury.

Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt is back in contention after missing several weeks with a muscle injury, and there is also a timely boost on the wing, as Amad Diallo has returned after recovering from the ankle ligament issue he picked up in February.

Both players have trained with the first team this week and are included in the matchday squad.

United’s attacking options are otherwise unchanged, with Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and captain Bruno Fernandes all included, while midfielders Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro provide strength in the centre of the park.

Amorim will need a big performance from his defence, which could now feature de Ligt depending on final assessments.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club will be without one of their most influential players.

Spanish midfielder Oihan Sancet, who has been their top scorer this season, is not featured in their matchday squad as he has been ruled out of the tie through injury.

His absence is expected to impact Athletic’s ability to create from midfield.

This is a major blow for Ernesto Valverde’s team, especially considering Sancet’s stellar form this season.

The 25-year-old has scored 17 goals and provided three assists across all competitions, despite battling persistent hamstring issues.

He had previously missed matches earlier in the campaign due to both hamstring and ankle problems.

Although Oihan Sancet has been ruled out, the hosts welcome the return of winger Nico Williams, who will be their primary attacking outlet.

Manchester United know the importance of bringing a strong result back to Old Trafford for the second leg.

With key players returning and motivation at its peak, Amorim’s men have every reason to believe they can take a big step toward silverware.
