At Manchester United, there is a tendency to closely follow players that have recently left the club and fawn over their progress.
Rasmus Hojlund, Antony and Marcus Rashford are just a few of the recent examples that have had success away from Old Trafford attracting the ire of fans as United has not been the club where players flourish.
Andre Onana’s debut for Trabzonspor against Fenerbahçe was something similar with the Cameroonian giving a stellar goalkeeping performance, something he rarely ever did during his time at Old Trafford.
According to a report in Tribuna.com Onana faced 29 shots making eight huge saves including four diving stops where in contrast to his time with the Red Devils, he was regularly parrying the ball.
The former Inter Milan goalkeeper earned him the Man of the Match award, but it’s his passionate half time speech that is gaining traction.
Trabzonspor had a team mate sent off as they had to play most of the game with 10 men after the 20th minute red card, this led Onana to to gesticulate and urge the rest of his team to fight for the red carded player.
Despite the loss and Fenerbahçe getting to play most of the game with a numerical advantage, Onana prevented 1.63 goals.
Though there were heroics there was also the bad habits that we came to regularly associate Onana with at United.
Ex-United player Fred fired a tame shot in the goalkeeper’s direction on the stroke of half time leading to En-Nesyri scoring the winner.
Irrespective of the mistake, Onana’s performance was championed. After being swiftly removed from his goalkeeping position at United late on in the summer, it’s clear the Cameroonian is hellbent on taking up a lead role at his new club.
