Manchester United’s summer transfer window has been dominated by a flurry of activity, with several high-profile arrivals shaping Ruben Amorim’s plans for the 2025/26 season.

From Matheus Cunha to Diego Leon, the Red Devils invested heavily, spending over £215million on new talent.

The forward line was bolstered, and defensive reinforcements ensured depth across the squad.

Yet the one position that saw the most behind-the-scenes scrutiny was between the sticks, with uncertainty over who would ultimately lead the line for the Red Devils.

Fans have noticed subtle shifts in selection during the opening games, hinting at internal deliberations at Carrington.

The goalkeeper situation has quietly been one of the most talked-about topics among the coaching staff and hierarchy.

Despite United not intending to pursue a new signing in goal at the start of the window, circumstances changed rapidly when Andre Onana returned for pre-season.

On day one, he reported a hamstring issue, followed by a full injury on day two, raising questions over his post-summer fitness and readiness to start the campaign.

Altay Bayindir was given the nod in the first three Premier League fixtures, with Tom Heaton named on the bench during the Arsenal clash, leaving Andre Onana surprisingly omitted despite feeling fit.

The seeds of doubt had been sown at the end of last season, when Bayindir started the final league game against Aston Villa and Onana was left out after a disappointing Europa League final display.

Adding fuel to the fire, Onana returned to Carrington with a request for a new contract, as per The Athletic.

The goalkeeper had been clear about his stance since receiving the standard 25% cut for non-qualification to the Champions League, a move that did not sit well with Amorim.

While Monaco showed tentative interest, they were informed that United’s valuation was a minimum of £30million and declined to pursue the deal further.

Following the Fulham game, Onana’s representatives enquired again about exit options, but were told the player remained part of Amorim’s plans.

By this stage, however, United had already activated the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, ensuring cover in goal and signalling a shift in long-term strategy.
