Andre Onana has kick-started his life away from Old Trafford as the Cameroon international made his debut for Trabzonspor this weekend.
The former Manchester United first-choice goalkeeper has found himself on loan with Trabzonspor, with his Old Trafford career now uncertain despite signs of Ruben Amorim backing him at the start of the summer.
Whilst Onana had made several costly mistakes over the last two seasons, Amorim and United’s priority to recruit to their attack showed signs of giving the goalkeeper another chance between the sticks.
However, a timely hamstring injury at the start of pre-season training saw him ruled out of action, with a video of him playing football with friends on a makeshift mud pitch while on leave raising concerns for Amorim over the goalkeeper’s conditioning training.
As such, Altay Bayindir has been chosen to replace the former first-choice shot-stopper in all of United’s Premier League outings, seeing Ander Onana reduced to one performance this season in the Red Devils’ embarrassing defeat by Grimsby Town, eliminating them from the Carabao Cup.
Before the cup game, Onana was offered out on loan to West Ham United; however, following his poor performance, the move was rejected by the Hammers.
However, Trabzonspor were still keen to bring their target to Turkey, with the Super Lig side initially tabling a permanent transfer offer before agreeing a loan deal with United.
With all details confirmed and agreed, the Cameroon international gave his green light to the move, which allowed the deal to officially go through before the Turkish transfer window closed.
Now, Andre Onana have completed his debut for Trabzonspor, which on the whole was an impressive display despite a costly error.
In the game against Fenerbahçe, the goalkeeper made a good save on the brink of halftime, unfortunately parrying the ball at the feet of Youssef En-Nesyri, who calmly slotted the ball into the net as Andre Onana watched on.
Unfortunately for Onana, this goal was extremely reminiscent of some of his routine Manchester United blunders; however, the game was not without glimmers of hope.
By this point, Trabzonspor were already down to ten men after the sending off of Okay Yokuslu in the 20th minute, putting Onana and his defence on the back foot for the majority of the game.
Also, outside of the costly mistake, Onana made eight saves, preventing Fenerbahce from scoring an expected 3 goals, limiting them to just a 1-0 victory.
With 29 shots against him and four big chances, Andre Onana was awarded the Player of the Match for keeping his side in the game.
As such, this impressive display shows the potential the keeper still has; however, Trabzonspor will be hoping his blunders will stop sooner rather than later.
