Manchester United’s youth system is once again under the spotlight as the club looks to build on its proud tradition of nurturing homegrown talent.

With the senior team experiencing a poor start to the 2025/26 campaign, the academy has become an even more vital part of the club’s long-term strategy.

Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, has been tasked with overseeing a complete revamp behind the scenes and is determined to continue strengthening the pathways for young players.

United’s hierarchy have already made several strategic moves in 2024 to ensure the next generation of talent is given the best possible platform to succeed.

Stephen Torpey, another former City academy figure, recently stepped in to replace Nick Cox as head of the academy, while David Horseman has joined as U21 assistant manager following Dave Hughes’ departure to take charge of Newport County.

These appointments highlight a clear vision of blending experience with a proven record of youth development.

Now, the club are in advanced discussions to appoint former Manchester City staff member Alan Wright as part of the ongoing restructuring, as per the Manchester Evening News.

Alan Wright is set to coach in the Professional Development Phase group, which caters for players aged Under-18 to Under-21 as they transition into full-time football.

The 52-year-old spent a decade coaching City’s Under-16 side before moving to a sports agency role in February 2024.

During his time at the Etihad Campus, Wright helped oversee the creation of more than £350 million in revenue from player sales and earned a reputation for developing young talent.

He also holds a UEFA A Licence and has an extensive playing career of over 300 games, turning out for Aston Villa, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Cheltenham Town and Fleetwood Town.

Alan Wright worked closely with Jason Wilcox during their time at City, but it is understood that United’s head of player development and coaching, Travis Binnion, advised the club on this potential appointment.

Binnion, who played alongside Wright at Sheffield United before injury ended his career early, continues to play a crucial role in shaping the Red Devils’ next generation.

While the deal has yet to be finalised, Wright is expected to take up the position as United continue their bold reshaping of the academy to match the club’s ambitions on and off the pitch.
