English Premier League legend Alan Shearer has criticised Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford for his showing following the Red Devil’s 2-1 defeat against Brighton at the Amex stadium on Saturday.

Shearer is the leading top goal scorer in Premier League history, with 260 goals in 441 appearances between 1992 and 2006 for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. So he knows a thing or two about scoring. Well, the Premier League legend began his rant by highlighting that Erik ten Hag’s side has scored 57 goals in the league last season – fewer than any other side.

The man at the heart of his rant, United’s own Marcus Rashford.

Rashford missed out on Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad and the 26-year-old is desperate to get back to his best form he showcased in the 2022/23 season. That year the winger scored 30 goals and providing 10 assists in 56 appearances across all competitions in Ten Hag’s debut season at the helm at Old Trafford.

However, the Carrington graduate has struggled to replicate that form thus far, subsequently leading to continuous heavy criticism and spotlight on his performances.

Despite having a goal ruled out for offside against Brighton, the English international failed to register a single shot against the Seagulls. Unfortunately, this was the same situation in the opening match against Fulham last weekend, despite playing the whole 90 minutes.

Shearer, who’s often lauded for his goal scoring abilities took issue with the Manchester United forward for getting caught offside twice against Brighton.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy’s been brought into there and he’s going to have to work his magic somehow,” said the Newcastle United legend.

He continued: “I know they they have got [Rasmus] Hojlund out injured but when he comes in he’s going to have to improve that because, on today’s evidence and in the game against Fulham, it’s not been anywhere near good enough.”

Shearer went on to explain that Rashford, who’s been in the United squad since the 2015/16 under Louis van Gaal is not a youngster anymore, citing that the forward should have enough experience to time his positioning at his age.

“Yeah, but he’s not a youngster anymore. He has to understand the position and look across the pitch when you can see the whole of it, you shouldn’t be offside then,” Shearer added.

Rashford has reportedly been having extra training sessions with club legend van Nistelrooy, who was brought back to the club as an assistant manager in July. The former Dutch international scored 150 goals for United in 219 between 2001 and 2006.

Erik ten Hag’s men will host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday in the much anticipated North West derby between two of the most successful clubs in England.
