1. Eric Cantona
Eric Cantona is often remembered as a Manchester United icon, but his international career with France never reached the heights it could have.
Earning just 45 caps, Cantona’s time with the national team was marked by both brilliance and controversy, ultimately cutting short what should have been a much longer international career.

After making his debut in 1987, Cantona was temporarily banned from the national team in 1988 for publicly insulting the manager.
He was later recalled by Michel Platini, under whom he played a key role in France’s qualification for Euro 1992.
However, despite his talent, the team failed to impress at the tournament.
Things took a further turn in 1995 when Cantona’s infamous “kung-fu” incident led to a suspension that ended his international career prematurely.
At the time, he had been named captain by new coach Aime Jacquet, but the suspension saw him lose both the captaincy and his place in the team.
Despite playing some of his best football for Manchester United in the mid-90s, Cantona was never recalled to the national team.
With only 45 caps to his name, Cantona remains a player who undoubtedly should have had more international appearances for France.
