Manchester United 5 – 2 Tottenham Hotspur
2008/09
We all remember the image. Cristiano Ronaldo takes his top off after scoring to give United the lead.
But that’s only part of the story.
Harry Redknapp brought his Spurs side to face reigning English Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners to Old Trafford in a game that many thought United would win.
However, surprisingly, Tottenham were leading 2-0 at half time thanks to two goals in three minutes from Darren Bent and Luka Modric.
The second half brought on one of Old Trafford’s greatest comeback stories.
With 57 minutes on the clock, Ronaldo scored a penalty to half the deficit.
Ten minutes later, Wayne Rooney equalised.
Just a minute after that, Ronaldo scored and proceeded to take his shirt off and throw it into the air before being mobbed by his teammates.
But the fun didn’t stop there. Rooney added another three minutes later, before former Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov made it 5-2 with just over 10 minutes left in the game.
In all, United had scored 5 goals in 22 minutes to blow away the North London side.
This win played a crucial role in their successful title defence that season and demonstrated arguably the club’s greatest ever attacking forward line that included the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Berbatov.
