4. Ilkay Gundogan
In the summer of 2015, Manchester United was linked heavily with Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan.
Reports at the time suggested that United had agreed to a £21.5 million deal to bring the German midfielder to Old Trafford.
However, Dortmund made it clear they were unwilling to sell, and the move never materialized.
Instead, United turned their attention to Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, with both players ultimately failing to live up to expectations.
Meanwhile, Gundogan moved to Manchester City in 2016 and became a key player under Pep Guardiola.
He has since won multiple Premier League titles and played a crucial role in City’s treble-winning 2022-23 season.
Gundogan’s intelligence, passing, and ability to control the tempo of games have made him one of the Premier League’s best midfielders, a status that United’s midfield signings during that period failed to achieve.
