2. Manchester United 7-2 Newcastle
1976/77
Manchester United’s biggest League Cup victory came in the 1976-77 season Fourth Round, when they delivered an emphatic 7-2 win over Newcastle United.
Two rounds after smashing five past Tranmere Rovers, United were finding the net with regularity once again.
This match stands as the club’s most emphatic triumph in the competition’s history, with Gordon Hill scoring a memorable hat-trick.
This dominant performance was a high point in a transformative season for United.
The United lineup on the day was a who’s who of legends.
Alex Stepney, Arthur Albiston, Lou Macari and Sammy McIlroy, Sir Matt Busby’s final ever signing, all played in the fixture.
Unfortunately, United crashed out of the League Cup in the 5th round to Everton.
But there was good news to come.
At the end of the season, Manchester United won the FA Cup, ending a 9 year trophy drought.
Despite that trophy, this turned out to be the last season in charge for manager Tommy Docherty.
United brought Dave Sexton in as they tried to replicate the success achieved under Sir Matt Busby.
It wasn’t until a certain Sir Alex Ferguson came into the door that Manchester United were restored to old glories.
