5. Manchester United 5-0 Tranmere

1976/77

Manchester United’s first ever encounter with Tranmere Rovers came in the 1976-77 League Cup second round at Old Trafford.

The match, played just four games into the season, saw United secure a 5-0 victory.

United winger Steve Coppell faced his former club, having fond memories of his time at Tranmere.

Despite a goalless first half, United pulled away after the break with goals from Gerry Daly, Lou Macari, Stuart Pearson and Gordon Hill.

Tranmere, though well-organised, couldn’t match United’s quality.

United boss Tommy Docherty praised Tranmere’s first-half performance, while Tranmere’s manager Johnny King felt the final score was harsh.

Tranmere’s players received applause from the Stretford End, and Tranmere benefited hugely from the two clubs first ever tie.

It would take a whole 44 seasons before the clubs met again.

This time, the tie was played at Tranmere ground Prenton Park, but the result was even more one sided.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men ran out 6-0 with goals from six different scorers – Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Anthony Martial and a Mason Greenwood penalty.

To date, those are the only two games between the sides in their history.
