Sammy McIlroy

Sammy McIlroy, a former Northern Ireland international and midfielder, is another player who bridged the gap between Manchester United and Manchester City during his career.

McIlroy began his professional career at Manchester United in 1969, becoming Sir Matt Busby’s last ever signing, and went on to become a key figure in the club’s midfield for the next decade, earning his place in the club’s history.

His versatility and technical ability made him a valuable asset at Old Trafford and he left the club to join Stoke City in a club record transfer of £350,000 in 1982.

Despite winning the club’s Player of the Year award, McIlroy was released on a free transfer in 1985 and made the move to Manchester City, where he continued to showcase his footballing prowess for a season.

Shortly after leaving City, McIlroy transitioned into becoming a football manager.
