Manchester United’s summer window is beginning to take on a familiar and frustrating pattern – one where the club risks being remembered more for who they didn’t sign rather than who they did.
From Liam Delap to Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike, United’s list of missed opportunities continues to grow, with key targets slipping away at decisive moments.
Each of those players had been tracked as part of the club’s long-term vision for the rebuild under Ruben Amorim, but none have ended up at Old Trafford.
The midfield remains another area of concern.
Particularly following the departure of Christian Eriksen, which has shifted the dynamic of the team and required tactical rebalancing in the middle of the pitch.
One player long admired by the club – Joao Palhinha – was again on United’s radar earlier this summer, following scouting reviews of Bundesliga talent and Amorim’s desire for a more combative midfield presence.
But in the latest twist, Tottenham have now agreed personal terms with Palhinha, according to Fabrizio Romano on X.
The North London club are finalising a loan deal with Bayern Munich, which will include a non-mandatory buy option, allowing Spurs to test the waters before committing long-term.
Palhinha has struggled to settle in Germany and is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League, where he was a standout performer with Fulham.
Spurs will cover his full salary as part of the agreement, and talks are now in the final stages — placing real pressure on United to either act fast or watch another target slip away.
