One of the areas that Manchester United have found most success in is the commercial arm of the football club.

While Ed Woodward had a lot of flaws when it came to player recruitment, he was regularly lauded for turning United into a commercial machine.

Despite a relative lack of major success over the years, the Red Devils have maintained their position in the world mainly due to the money generated from commercial deals.

These deals, in turn, have allowed the club to spend of player signings and wages.

To a large degree, the commercial success has covered some of the cracks in the football side.

If the commercial side of the business was performing poorly, then it may have resulted in changes sooner.

But change has inevitably come.

With INEOS buying a share in the club, the old guard are out and a new team are in instead.

And this changing of the guard is not just off the field.

One of the key visuals on the pitch has also changed recently.

Front of shirt sponsorship is a big deal in terms of generating massive revenue for a club.

Whoever pays for that is getting prime real estate when it comes to fans of the club.

Every shirt sold has that sponsors logo.

And when the players go on the pitch, that’s one of the most striking parts of their attire.

Manchester United have had some famous shirt sponsors over the years.

From Sharp to Chevrolet to today’s Snapdragon sponsors.

One of the most recent sponsors were TeamViewer.

TeamViewer rose to prominence during COVID times and partnered with Manchester United in 2021.

However, that partnership didn’t last too long.

During December 2022, it was revealed that Manchester United had brought back the deal and instead signed with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon brand.

That new deal began at the beginning of this new football season.

And it’s now been revealed how much the club paid to get out of that deal with TeamViewer.

According to UnitedInFocus, Manchester United paid a one-off fee of £7m to end the deal early.

The previous agreement with TeamViewer was for £47m a season.

By paying this termination fee, MUFC were able to move forward the deal with Snapdragon, who are paying £60m a season instead.

So it seems that the numbers make sense when you see it from an overall perspective.

Snapdragon’s deal includes more than just the front of shirt deal, they are also sponsoring the back of some shirts too, but it still realises a significant increase in revenue generated from a sponsorship deal.

In an area of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), every penny counts.

And it appears that the Manchester United hierarchy thought that the previous deal was a bad one and were happy to pay to get out of it.
