Erik ten Hag has not been having a great time of it lately. After three game Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League having followed an injury plague pre-season and a penalty shoot-out loss in the Community Shield to bitter rivals Manchester City.
Concerns were raised about the United manager’s suitability for the job at the end of last season following a poor campaign coming in eighth overall. Ultimately, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the board stuck by the Dutchman, extending his contract by another year.
However, after the 3-0 loss to Liverpool this weekend, with Arne Slot quickly but expertly taking apart the United tactics to explain how they got their win live on Sky Sports, many questions are now being raised about ten Hag’s future at United.
Prior to the game, new CEO Omar Berrada shared his support for ten Hag, saying: “Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we’re fully backing him.”
He added: “Erik has our full backing and we’ve worked very closely together in this transfer window. We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team.”
However, as they did at the end of last season, the club are starting to look at potential replacements in case drastic actions are needed if the club’s results don’t start improving.
The Mirror have now reported that United are returning to one of their previous shortlisted individuals to potentially step into ten Hag’s shoes.
The potential replacement for Erik ten Hag
According to the report, The Red Devils are now looking at Thomas Tuchel as the potential next manager at Old Trafford.
Tuchel was considered at the end of the summer alongside Mauricio Pochettino, Kieran McKenna and Thomas Frank.
The 51-year-old was replaced at Bayern Munich last year with Vincent Kompany and has been without a club since. However throughout his managerial career, Tuchel has won trophies with the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG and Borussia Dortmund.
Back in 2020/21 when managing Chelsea and winning the Champions League, Tuchel was awarded the World’s Best Club Coach award, marking only the second time a Chelsea manager had won the award, with the first being Jose Mourinho.
With the manager delivering results and winning trophies whichever club he goes to, this may be a promising option for if United do part ways with Erik ten Hag.
