With a really shaky start to the new Premier League season, new Manchester United CEO, Omar Berrada, has recently spoken out about the future of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Towards the end of last season there was an expectation that ten Hag would be leaving the managerial seat at United after leading the club to their worst league finish since 1990, finishing eighth overall.
Other successful managers such as Kieran McKenna, Thomas Frank, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel were all shortlist to potentially replace the Dutchman, however INEOS decided to stand by ten Hag and went even further to show their support by extending his contract by an extra year.
However, with the recent rocky start to the new season, speculation of the Dutchman’s future is already starting to rear it’s ugly head once more.
The opening game against Fulham went United’s way with a 1-0 win, however an injury time goal from Joao Pedro secured Brighton’s 2-1 win over United on matchday two.
Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler has reported Berrada as commenting: “We’re very happy with that decision [to give Ten Hag a new contract],”
He continued: “Erik has our full backing and we’ve worked very closely together in this transfer window. We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team.
“Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we’re fully backing him.”
However, it’s worth noting that these comments were made prior to Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford, with some players, including club captain Bruno Fernandes now speaking out to question the tactical play of the squad directed by the manager.
Whilst ten Hag put the loss down to poor performance and individual errors, Fernandes believes this isn’t what should be done, praising the bravery of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo who were at the centre of the criticism from making mistakes.
