Manchester United have regularly been linked with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong over the years.
In 2022, the Red Devils set their sights firmly on the Dutch international, prioritising his pursuit the whole summer. When it didn’t come off, the club diverted with a last minute dash for Casemiro, bringing him in from Real Madrid.
Erik ten Hag recently commented on the pursuit of the midfielder, confirming his attempt to sign de Jong in his first transfer window as United manager.
Discussing how he would fit into the team, especially on a partnership with Casemiro, ten Hag commented: “They would have been really connected with each other, they would have been really complementary with each other, absolutely,.”
He continued: “But that is a typical player, if you want to play the Ajax style, you need that type of player, yeah.”
De Jong is another player that ten Hag managed at Ajax as the Dutch manager reassembles his Eredivisie squad at Old Trafford, with Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui about to join their former Ajax teammates; Antony, Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez.
Over recent weeks it’s emerged that Untied have once more renewed their interest in the 27-year-old, approaching Barcelona over a deal.
Now, the man himself has addressed the rumours that United are interested in him again.
Frenkie de Jong addresses United transfer news
The Athletic have reported that de Jong has given a firm answer on his future, and whether that lies with Barcelona or a possible move to United.
Although Barcelona’s board would be ok with approving de Jong’s departure, the midfielder has no interest in leaving the LaLiga club.
Speaking about his future at Camp Nou, amid the Manchester United links, the 27-year-old said: “Staying at Barca? Yes, I’m very happy in Barcelona with my family, for sure.”
He continued: “[Barcelona boss] Hansi Flick wants me to be key. I talked to him. It was good.”
