Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is intensifying his rehabilitation from a knee injury that caused him to miss Euro 2024. The 31-year-old was initially part of Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad but had to be dropped due to insufficient recovery time.

Maguire, who also missed the last five games of United’s season, including the FA Cup final against Manchester City, did not participate in United’s pre-season opener—a 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg in Norway.

United have suggested that Maguire might feature in Saturday’s friendly against Rangers at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. However, his participation remains doubtful as he has not rejoined team sessions. Over the summer, he spent time in Portugal working with United’s medical team to regain fitness.

Last summer, United agreed to sell Maguire to West Ham United, but personal terms could not be agreed upon. Despite this, Maguire had a reasonably positive season, featuring in 31 games across all competitions and scoring four goals, including a decisive header in the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City.

Maguire’s future at United remains uncertain, especially with the club’s recent defensive signings. United have secured Leny Yoro and are in negotiations with Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt. They also had two bids for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite rejected. Additionally, Jonny Evans has signed a one-year extension, putting further pressure on Maguire and Victor Lindelof’s positions.

The £80 million signing from Leicester City has been linked with moves to top European clubs like Barcelona, AC Milan, and Bayern Munich. However, a transfer to a mid-table Premier League club might be more feasible if United decide to let him go.

Despite the speculation, Maguire is reportedly determined to stay at United and fight for his place. However, if the club acquires two new central defenders this summer, it could significantly affect his position within the team. It remains to be seen if Maguire would accept a reduced role at this stage of his career.

In conclusion, while Maguire is making strides in his recovery and remains committed to United, the arrival of new defensive talent and the ongoing transfer rumors cast doubt on his long-term future at Old Trafford.
