On the back of United’s signing of Joshua Zirkzee, the Red Devils look like their on the brink of making their next huge signing.
Whilst it was expected the Matthijs de Ligt would be the next signing, with personal terms agreed and positive talks with Bayern Munich, United’s stalling on an offer for de Ligt has paved the way for Leny Yoro to become their main target.
Earlier this summer LOSC Lille announced that Yoro was available to leave the Ligue 1 side with the centre-back entering the final year of his contract and no renewal was looking likely.
With the open statement of Yoro being able to leave the club, top European talents like Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain all flocked to scout and try to sign the young star.
Even though Real Madrid had an offer in on the 18-year-old, with the defender keen on a Madrid move, United stepped up and submitted a £52 million (€62 million) bid which surpassed that of Madrid’s offer.
With Lille accepting the offer and now favouring a United move for Yoro, all that was left to do for Erik ten Hag’s side was to convince the Frenchman that a move to Old Trafford was better than a move to LaLiga, a hard sell considering Yoro had no interest in the Premier League.
Now, reports from The Athletic’s David Ornstein suggest that United have succeeded in their task with Yoro traveling to Manchester to complete a medical assessment ahead of signing a new contract as a Red Devil.
If this all goes well, United will have secured their second major signing in a week, with Yoro being regarded as one of the top defenders of his generation, a perfect asset to help ten Hag remodel his back line.
It’s unsure whether United will still pursue the likes of de Ligt and Jarrad Branthwaite, with any further purchases relying on the sale of existing players, however the offloads do appear to be starting with Mason Greenwood seemingly set to move to Marseille.
