Manchester United made several key recruitments this summer, including deadline day signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
The goalkeeper was brought in after concerns over Andre Onana’s suitability as the club’s first-choice shot-stopper emerged once more following his disastrous showing against Grimsby Town.
Unfortunately, back-up keeper Altay Bayindir has also failed to show he’s a reliable cover in goal, however has been Ruben Amorim’s primary choice this season, featuring in all four of United’s Premier League fixtures.
As such, The Red Devils made a £18 million move for the Antwerp goalkeeper who kept 7 clean sheets last year, having a save percentage of 77% only conceding 52 goals with an expected 67.54 expected goals on target in the Jupiler Pro League.
In comparison, Onana conceded 44 goals with an 44.53 expected goals on target faced, whilst Bayindir conceded 10 goals with a 10.07 expected goals on target faced.
As such, Lammens’ stats set him above both of United’s options, with the goalkeeper now settling into life at Old Trafford.
However, new reports have revealed that Lammens’ brother, Tom Lammens who plays for KVC De Toekomst Borsbeek in the lower leagues in Belgium, advised his brother against joining Manchester United.
Speaking to Nieuwsblad, Lammens’ brother explained his concerns, commenting: “There’s a lot of quality, you play for trophies there, and Senne could probably immediately make his mark in the Champions League.”
He continued: “I was initially sceptical about a move to United, because many players there had already succumbed to the pressure and couldn’t reach their full potential. But ultimately, it was Senne who had to make the decision.
“United gave him the best feeling. Partly because Tony Coton, United’s goalkeeping scout, had been following him for almost a year and was very convinced of his qualities. It would also be great if the club could return to its former glory and if Senne could contribute to that.”
