Manchester United’s first team continue to face huge questions under Ruben Amorim after a dismal opening to the Premier League season, and the pressure will only grow with a tricky run of fixtures looming.

The club’s hierarchy have backed the manager, but the atmosphere around Old Trafford remains tense following heavy defeats and a lack of attacking spark.

Meanwhile, supporters are looking to the upcoming FA Cup clash as a chance to inject some much-needed positivity into a faltering campaign.

United’s injury list is also mounting, forcing Amorim to lean on the club’s younger talents more than ever.

All eyes are on the January window for potential reinforcements and possible outgoings.

Against this unsettled backdrop, a young Red was on the brink of leaving – only for the move to collapse at the eleventh hour.

Sam Mather’s proposed transfer to Turkish side Kayserispor fell through on Friday after Manchester United concluded there simply wasn’t enough time to finalise the deal before Turkey’s deadline.

Sam Mather had been eager to kickstart his senior career away from academy football and talks had reached an advanced stage with the Super Lig club.

A permanent deal had been agreed, complete with a buyback clause, and personal terms were reportedly settled.

However, United required board-level sign-off and ultimately judged there was insufficient time to push the paperwork through, as per the Manchester Evening News.

As a result, Mather remains a Manchester United player and must cope with the frustration of missing out on a fresh start.

Sam Mather, who has shone predominantly on the left wing but prefers to operate as a No.10, had attracted interest not only from Turkey but also from clubs in Sweden and Germany earlier in the summer window.

His situation is now expected to be revisited in the January market, giving him a few more months to impress while training with the first team and continuing to feature in academy fixtures.

The youngster’s contract runs until the summer of 2027, meaning United retain control over his long-term future – but the disappointment of a collapsed deal will sting as he looks to take the next step in his career.
