Ruben Amorim took over the manager’s seat at Manchester United just under a year ago, when the new INEOS ownership appointed the former Sporting CP boss as Erik ten Hag’s replacement.
Joining in November 2024, Amorim inherited the club during their worst period in the Premier League era; however couldn’t prevent The Red Devils from falling even further down the table.
Unfortunately, now United are in an even worse position, having only claimed four points in four games, making it their worst league start in 33 years, with their Grimsby Town defeat also being the first time a tier four side has ever eliminated them from a knock-out tournament.
However, Amorim’s seat at Old Trafford is seemingly safe, as despite some players losing confidence in the manager and his system, the United hierarchy is still sure of their appointment, seeing Amorim as a long-term solution rather than a quick-fix, so he needs to be given the time he needs.
That said, he does have a potential escape route, with Benfica looking to come knocking on his door if Joao Noronha Lopes is appointed as the club’s new president next month.
Now, Portuguese outlet Record has been discussing Amorim’s potential return to Portugal, seeing it as a real possibility for the Portuguese manager to return to a place of comfort, in a league he knows he is successful.
Another analysis from Record, however, highlighted that the situation with Amorim, if he were to be dismissed from Old Trafford, is a bit of a “grey area”, as the 40-year-old has never been sacked from a role before, so it’s unknown how he’d respond to that situation.
Now, with the Benfica bosses having been in attendance at the Etihad Stadium for the Manchester Derby, the opportunity to return to Portugal seems even more real.
Ultimately, it’s unknown how Amorim feels about the interest from his boyhood club, with the Portuguese manager still set to be a success at Old Trafford.
