Adam Wharton has been on Manchester United’s shortlist since last summer, when The Red Devils were looking for a partner for Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park.
United ultimately went for Manuel Ugarte instead, a decision which is yet to prove beneficial, and as such, Wharton has remained on their radar throughout last season.
This summer, The Red Devils saw their attack as requiring more of a priority for recruitment, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko all moving to Old Trafford.
The United recruitment team did look at a midfield signing, with players like Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba being approached; however, nothing materialised.
Now, Marc Brus of CaughtOffside has reported that not only are Manchester United still interested in Adam Wharton, but he could be set to move in January.
It’s understood that United are up against Chelsea and Liverpool, with the pair of Premier League giants also keen on signing the England international.
Whilst the interest was there this summer, with Crystal Palace having lost Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, the club had no interest in losing another one of their key stars, especially with Marc Guehi looking set to move to Anfield.
In a bid to discourage his suitors from making a move for the talented midfielder, Palace put a £100 million asking price on their star, much like Brighton did with Baleba, ultimately seeing them retain the 21-year-old.
However the report explains that sources linked to Crystal Palace are expecting strong interest in Wharton in January, potentially seeing the England international move clubs.
With Toby Collyer being with West Brom for the season on loan, Amorim’s midfield options are limited to Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.
As such, a new midfielder is needed in one of the next two windows, however if that midfielder is Wharton remains to be seen.
