Manchester United are on the brink of offloading struggling goalkeeper Andre Onana as he’s recently landed in Turkey to sign for Trabzonspor.
The Super Lig side are set to take the Cameroon international on loan for the remainder of the season as Erik ten Hag’s first-choice goalkeeper has dropped down the ranks under Ruben Amorim, seemingly since the start of the summer.
Since the end of last season, despite Onana’s routinely problematic displays between the posts, Manchester United’s recruitment team seemed focused on recruiting to their attack rather than finding a replacement for Onana.
It was widely understood that Amorim was looking to stand by Onana for another season, to give him a chance to step up, however, the club’s outlook on keeping Onana seemed to change when targets like Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa, PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Botafogo’s John Victor all became linked with an Old Trafford move.
However, iNews has now reported that Onana was so sure he’d be staying with United as Amorim’s first choice keeper that he rejected a move to French giants AS Monaco.
Following their rejection, Monaco signed Bayer Leverkusen’s Lukas Hradecky who’s started all three of Monaco’s Ligue 1 games, with the Frnech side winning two and losing to LOSC Lille as Adi Hutter’s side sit in four place.
At United, The Red Devils did a u-turn from backing Andre Onana, signing Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens on deadline day, ultimately leading to United needing to offload either Onana or back-up keeper Altay Bayindir.
However, with Bayindir being selected over Onana for all three of United’s Premier League games, with Onana only playing in the club’s disastrous loss to Grimsby Town, the stage was set for Onana’s departure.
Whilst the move to Turley is only scheduled for the remainder of the season, if Lammens impresses as Amorim hopes he will, it’s hard to believe that Onana will have a place at Old Trafford next summer.
