Robin van Persie was a true legend of the Premier League, having had impressive stints with both Arsenal and Manchester United between 2004 and 2015.

At the Emirates, van Persie made his name as a prolific goalscorer in English football, grabbing 132 and 55 assists in 278 games, even grabbing a Premier League Golden Boot award in the 2011/12 season with 30 goals, also earning him the Premier League Player of the Year award.

His goal contributions saw him win the FA Cup and Community Shield for Arsenal, before his talent earned him a £26.5 million move to Old Trafford in 2012 where he helped the Red Devils win their last Premier League title, scoring 26 goals for his second Premier League Golden Boot and Player of the Year awards.

Across his three years with United, van Persie grabbed 58 goals and 16 assists in 105 games before moving on to Fenerbahce in 2015.

However, the Dutch striker was just as prolific on the international stage as with club football, being the Netherland’s top goalscorer with 50 goals in 102 games.

That is until now.

Tonight, the Netherlands took on Lithuania in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with the Dutch national side coming out victorious, albeit only just.

Lithuania nearly managed to rescue a draw entering half-time as 2-2, however the Netherlands came out on top, grabbing a final goal to make it 3-2.

Not only was it a win for Ronald Koeman’s side, however former Manchester United attacker Memphis Depay surpassed his fellow ex-Red Devil, scoring a brace to help defeat Lithuania.

As such, Depay now has 52 goals in 104 games, making him the Netherlands’ highest goalscorer ever.

Memphis Depay is currently playing his trade in Brazil with Corinthians after failed stints with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid before seeing him left without a club before he moved to South America.

Whilst Depay has evidently shown up on the international stage, his performances for United were another example of a player being brought in for millions, only to fail to live up to the hype.

After 50 goals and 27 assists in 124 games for PSV Eindhoven, Memphis Depay joined United in 2015 for £30 million, to then only grab seven goals and five assists in 53 games for The Red Devils, seeing him move on to Lyon two years later for £14 million.
