Manchester United have made major steps to remodelling their squad this summer, with several players leaving, and a host of new faces moved to Old Trafford.
All of the “bomb squad”, barring Tyrell Malacia, have left this summer, with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony departing permanently, and Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and unofficial “bomb squad” member Rasmus Hojlund on season-long loans.
Alongside them, some of United’s impressive young talent like Toby Collyer and Harry Amass have also gone out on loan to help them gain more experience to bring back to The Red Devils to help them break into the senior squad.
However, one man who as missed out on a loan deal is Rhys Bennett.
The 21-year-old centre-back enjoyed a successful season on loan last year with Fleetwood Town in League Two, finishing ninth overall.
The youngster was vital in their campaign, making 38 appearances, even grabbing two goals against Stoke City and Crewe Alexander, and setting up Kayden Hughes in their 6-2 win over Walsall.
As such, it was widely believed that the defender was going to be set for another loan spell away from United, having out grown academy football.
Manchester Evening News has reported that over the summer, staff at United commented that “Rhys has his sights set high”, as it was perceived that a Championship loan was intended, or breaking into the senior squad.
However, with deadline day slamming shut, Bennett is still at Old Trafford and is set to be with the senior squad for the remainder of the season, unless we goes on loan in the winter.
