Ruben Amorim has been handed a potential setback headed into the international break, as Diogo Dalot has pulled out of international duty, leaving the Portuguese camp.
The right-back has been vital for United over the last two years, stepping in as long-term cover for the left-back role under Erik ten Hag when both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were out injured for the season.
Since signing Patrick Dorgu however, the defender has been able to return to the right flank, becoming Ruben Amorim’s right-wing-back in the Portuguese coach’s set-up which deploys dynamic wingers.
With how relied upon Diogo Dalot is, Amorim will surely be concerned that his star defender has been replaced in the Portugal call-ups by Lazio’s Nuno Tavares.
Now, Manchester United have taken to their official website to address the injury, commenting: “Manchester United have confirmed Diogo Dalot has pulled out of the Portugal squad.”
The statement continued: “The 26-year-old was due to play in World Cup qualifiers against in Armenia on Saturday and Hungary next Tuesday.
“However, Diogo has picked up an issue while training with his national team. The Portuguese Federation reported Diogo was suffering from “muscle discomfort”, with Lazio’s Nuno Tavares called up to replace him.
“The defender operated at left wing-back in the 3-2 win over Burnley at the weekend, supplying an assist for Bryan Mbeumo’s goal with a magnificent piece of work down the flank and clever cutback to the Cameroon international.
“Team-mate Bruno Fernandes remains with the Portugal camp, as they prepare for their game in Yerevan this weekend.”
Unfortunately this injury scare couldn’t have come at a worse time for Ruben Amorim, with United preparing to take on Manchester City in the Manchester Derby on their return from the September international break.
