Fans have been keeping a close eye on youth development, especially as the club’s academy continues to produce promising talent, including Wayne Rooney’s son, Kai, who is impressing for the U18s.

Meanwhile, the Championship has seen plenty of transfer activity in recent weeks, with clubs keen to strengthen their squads ahead of a long campaign.

Derby County have had their share of injury setbacks this season, affecting squad selection and prompting the need to loan out players for regular minutes.

Managerial experience has also been a hot topic, as several ex-United figures remain influential across the Football League.

Barnsley have now secured Derby County defender Jake Rooney on a season-long loan, as they announced via their website.

The 22-year-old, a cousin of former England, Manchester United, and Derby forward Wayne Rooney, has made 23 first-team appearances for the Rams since his senior debut in August 2022.

Rooney’s progress over the past two seasons has been hampered by knee injuries, limiting his ability to establish himself as a consistent starter.

Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane, who captained Derby during Rooney’s debut season, will now oversee the young defender’s development in League One.

This loan move is designed to give Rooney regular game time and help him regain match fitness following his injury setbacks.

For Barnsley, the addition of Rooney bolsters defensive options and provides depth in a position that has been tested by suspensions and minor injuries.

While the season is just beginning, supporters will be watching closely to see if Rooney can replicate the form he showed during his initial appearances for Derby.

Meanwhile, his time at Barnsley could prove pivotal in determining whether he can step up to higher levels, possibly following in the footsteps of his famous cousin.

The 2025/26 campaign will be an important one for both Jake Rooney and Barnsley, as expectations rise in a competitive League One.
