Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is without a doubt a truly talented goalkeeper.
For The Villains, Martinez has registered a total of 70 clean sheets in 212 games across five seasons, only allowing 257 goals against him.
For Argentina, the shot-stopper has 37 clean sheets in 53 games, only conceding 23 goals, helping the nation win back-to-back Copa America titles, sandwiched either side of the 2022 World Cup.
As such, the thought of Emiliano Martinez walking out as a Red Devil at Old Trafford was a dream for not only the fans of Manchester United, but also of the talented keeper himself.
Amid United’s defensive struggles, the Argentina international came onto United’s shortlist in a big way, seeming for a long time to be a sure-fire signing to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s options.
Unfortunately, the seemingly imminent move never came to, with United signing Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens instead.
However, The Athletic have now revealed further details about the links to Martinez, and how he waited at Bodymoor Heath, Aston Villa’s training ground, on deadline day, waiting for the call to travel to Carrington.
That call never came, despite the World Cup winner trying to call in a favour with international teammate Lisandro Martinez for the defender to advocate for his signing, which he reportedly did.
It’s also understood that Ruben Amorim himself spoke to Martinez back in June and July about a move, seeing the 33-year-old as a great asset that could be utilised in his squad.
Unfortunately for Martinez, no formal approach was made until United’s loan offer which was made after pre-season had once more begun, which was rejected fairly quickly.
Now, Emiliano Martinez is set to remain at Villa Park whilst Senne Lammens is determined to take Andre Onana’s spot as United’s first-choice goalkeeper.
