Rasmus Hojlund’s time at Manchester United has been heading toward a breaking point for some time.
After struggling to make a consistent impact last season, the Denmark international saw his role diminish further with the arrival of Benjamin Sesko this summer.
The competition up front has only increased the reality that opportunities would be limited, and his future at Old Trafford has looked increasingly untenable.
For weeks, speculation over a departure has mounted, with United needing to recoup funds and the striker himself ready for a new challenge.
Serie A clubs have been circling, with AC Milan and former side Atalanta among those linked, but Napoli have long emerged as frontrunners.
As news circulated on Wednesday afternoon, the structure of the deal was nearing completion, after negotiations dragged over whether a buy clause would be conditional or guaranteed.

Now, according to Gianluca Di Marzio on X, Napoli and Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement for Hojlund’s transfer.
The deal will see him move on loan with an obligation to buy, totalling €45 million (£38m).
This mirrors earlier Italian reports that revealed Napoli’s persistence, even ruling out other targets such as Joshua Zirkzee in favour of securing Hojlund.
It also follows United’s broader strategy of reshaping their forward line, balancing the books while backing new arrivals like Sesko and Matheus Cunha.
For Hojlund, who has already given the green light to personal terms, the agreement provides a chance to revive his career in a league he knows well.
All that remains is finalising the formalities, with Napoli confident the striker will be lining up in Serie A once again this season.
