Ruben Amorim has just experienced his worst defeat of his time at Old Trafford, with Manchester United being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier club Grimsby Town.

The League Two side defeated United in penalties after initially going up 2-0 thanks to yet another catastrophic showing from Andre Onana in goal on his first start of the season.

Whilst Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire pulled The Red Devils back into the game, it wasn’t enough to secure the win, seeing Ruben Amorim’s side knocked out of the competition in the Second Round.

Now, the Portuguese press have reacted to the loss, and they haven’t pulled their punches.

Firstly, A Bola described Ruben Amorim as hitting “rock bottom” following the elimination which came after 26 penalties as Bryan Mbeumo failed to convert United’s 13th spot-kick.

The report went on to describe the defeat as “the greatest humiliation of Ruben Amorim’s career” after the Portuguese manager promised more from his side this season.

Elsewhere, Record referred to Amorim as “a condemned coach” following the loss, referring to the defeat being described as a “shame”, “scandal” and “humiliation”.

Another report from Record highlighted two moments in the fixture which were referred to as unforgivable, putting further heat on the former Sporting CP manager.

Firstly was the manager turning to his tactics board an hour into the game, rerunning tests being caught by the tv cameras, and then was his lack of involvement with the ordering of the penalties.

The reports have also highlighted key commentary from the UK, with both the press and fans who have begun highlighting potential successors for the United head coach, with Amorim himself hinting he could be gone after the club face Burnley this weekend.
