Following last season’s disastrous 15th place finish in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim and his Manchester United side have just sunk even lower, having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup in their opening fixture by Grimsby Town.

The League Two side beat United in penalties after yet another problematic performance from Andre Onana saw Grimsby go 2-0 up.

Whilst Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire clawed back a draw, The Red Devils couldn’t do enough to rescue a win.

Speaking after the game to ITV Football, Ruben Amorim commented: “In the end was worse than the beginning.”

He continued: “It’s not about the result. In the penalties, I wasn’t thinking about the penalties to go to the next stage.

“I think the way we played, the way we faced competition. In one moment everything is so important.

“I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today. I just want to apologise to our fans. We have a game now and then we have time to think.”

However, the most telling part of the interview was Amorim’s comments, saying: “Something has to change and you’re not going to change 22 players again.”

It seems that the Portuguese manager is well aware of the extent in which the squad has been changed over the last few years, with Erik ten Hag having been sacked less than a year ago.
