Manchester United’s summer spending spree has left the club under pressure to balance the books, having committed close to £200m on attacking reinforcements.

That investment has raised the need to generate funds before the window shuts, with first-team names now being actively considered for sale, known as ‘bomb squad.’

Alejandro Garnacho’s situation has been one of the most pressing, with Ruben Amorim making it clear the winger does not feature in his long-term plans.

The Argentine has struggled for game time in the opening weeks of the season, summing up just how far his stock has fallen in United’s pecking order.

According to The Telegraph’s report, United and Chelsea are now close to agreeing terms for Garnacho in a deal worth up to £40m.

The 21-year-old is regarded by Chelsea as a Premier League-proven talent with major upside, while United benchmarked his value against the £50m Arsenal paid for Noni Madueke.

For Garnacho, the move is equally significant, with the winger desperate to secure his place in Argentina’s squad for their World Cup defence next summer.

Chelsea have conducted background checks on his character and attitude, though the ultimate judgement will be on his performances in west London.

The structure of the deal also leaves scope for future resale, with Chelsea aware of the market appeal Garnacho would carry if things do not work out.

Chelsea have long remained in the mix for Garnacho, with the Argentine only ever having his heart set on Chelsea.

It’s a move that will come as some frustration to United fans, with Garnacho himself said to be keen on proving Ruben Amorim wrong.

Elsewhere at Old Trafford, Kobbie Mainoo looks set to be another out the door, while Rasmus Hojlund edges closer to Napoli.
