Following the rebuild of Manchester United’s attack, The Red Devils have turned their attention to their midfield, with a new central midfielder needed to boost the squad.

Christian Eriksen left at the end of his contract at the start of the summer and veteran midfielder Casemiro is entering the last year of his contract, with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes being the only other senior players for the role.

As such, United have been looking at potential reinforcements in the form of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, Sevilla’s Lucien Agoume and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

However, another name on their shortlist is former Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz.

The Brazil international moved to Juventus last season, however struggled in his debut season with The Old Lady, and was ready to return to the Premier League.

Whilst the midfielder was included in potential swap-deals with Manchester United for Jadon Sancho, nothing materialised, with Sancho’s agent’s hefty commission demands proving too much for the Italian side.

As such, the door was left open for Luiz, with Nottingham Forest stepping in and snapping him up.

Taking to their official website, Nottingham Forest have unveiled the signing of Douglas Luiz, announcing: “Nottingham Forest is delighted to announce the signing of Douglas Luiz, who joins from Juventus.”

The statement continued: “The Brazilian joins on an initial season-long loan, with a conditional obligation to become a permanent deal next summer.

“Spending one year in Italy, the midfielder brings a wealth of experience to Forest having played in the Champions League for Juventus during his spell in Turin.”

Speaking for the first time as a Forest player, Luiz commented: “I am really happy to be here, it’s a big club and I decided to come here because I can see the ambition the club has.”

He continued: “I am so excited to start with the team and give my best for the shirt and the fans.”

Nottingham’s chief football officer, Ross Wilson also commented: “It’s been a very busy but successful period for us in the window in the past few weeks, and Douglas is another addition to the squad that will bring significant quality to the group.

“He’s played at the highest level for a long time, understands the demands of the Premier League, and has experience playing in elite European competition.

“We’re delighted that Douglas now joins the group, and we are sure that he will be warmly welcomed by everyone at Nottingham Forest.”
