Manchester United have had a busy pre-season, with Ruben Amorim experimenting with attacking combinations and defensive structures as the new Premier League campaign approaches.
Fans have been closely watching the integration of new signings Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo into the first team, while the club continues to assess squad depth in key areas.
The opening fixtures at Old Trafford and on the road will be a significant test for the team, particularly in midfield where options remain thin.
Pre-season results in the United States have shown promise, with wins against West Ham in New Jersey and a draw with Everton in Atlanta, but questions persist over balance and rotation.
Off the pitch, speculation over transfers, contract renewals, and potential loans continues to dominate conversations among supporters and pundits alike.
Amid this backdrop, Ruben Amorim has suggested a tactical solution should Manchester United fail to strengthen their central midfield.
United currently have only four out-and-out central midfielders.
Toby Collyer is set to join West Bromwich Albion on loan, Casemiro’s contract expires next year, and Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have only lined up ten times together in the middle of the park.
Bruno Fernandes is expected to start in midfield against Arsenal on Sunday, while Casemiro featured in three of United’s five pre-season games.
Ugarte and Mainoo were paired for the victory against West Ham and the draw with Everton, showcasing some promising combinations but highlighting the lack of depth in the pivot.
When asked about recruiting a midfielder, Amorim replied: “I’m really happy with our players, they are working really well, we have different players for that position, so we are prepared to win any game with our players.

“Maybe Mason Mount is a player that can play in that position if we want something different.
“But then we are going to find out during the season.
“But we have players to cope and win games in the Premier League.”
Amorim also addressed Rasmus Hojlund’s future amid links to AC Milan, stating: “He’s one more option. We will see.
“We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player.”
Hojlund had earlier expressed his intention to stay after scoring twice in United’s friendly victory over Bournemouth in Chicago but was subsequently benched against Everton and remained an unused substitute in the final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina.
He could be omitted from the matchday squad against Arsenal as Joshua Zirkzee has resumed full training, giving Amorim additional options up front.
