Manchester United’s transfer window is entering a decisive stage, with Ruben Amorim determined to add another high-quality midfielder before the deadline.

The Red Devils have been active in the market, already bringing in several big names, but the midfield remains a focal point after inconsistent pre-season performances in the pivot role.

United fans have been debating whether the club should invest heavily in one marquee signing or spread resources across multiple positions to strengthen the squad more evenly.

With competition from Premier League and European rivals intensifying, decisions in the coming weeks could define United’s season.

Against that backdrop, the club’s transfer focus could be set for a dramatic turn.

Manchester United are prepared to switch their attention to Sporting Lisbon captain Morten Hjulmand if they are priced out of a deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.

The 26-year-old Denmark international, who was one of Amorim’s most trusted players in Portugal, would cost less than half of the £120 million Brighton are demanding for Baleba.

According to The Sun, United are lining up a £50 million move for Morten Hjulmand, whose release clause is £68 million, but Sporting may accept around £10 million less if certain add-ons are met.

Amorim recruited Hjulmand for Sporting in 2023 for £15 million from Lecce, later making him captain.

The midfielder has been praised for his leadership, composure on the ball, and what Amorim has described as a “monster mentality.”

Under Amorim’s 4-3-2-1 system, Hjulmand made 65 appearances, winning two Primeira Liga titles and a Taca de Portugal.

Baleba remains United’s first choice, but his valuation could make a deal unworkable.

United’s need for a dynamic midfielder has been heightened by underwhelming pre-season displays from Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro, while Kobbie Mainoo is yet to find a settled role.

Any new arrival would likely partner Bruno Fernandes in a deeper position, freeing up United’s attacking midfielders to operate further forward.

Whether United push for Baleba or pivot to Hjulmand, the next few weeks could prove pivotal in shaping Amorim’s first-season project.
