When Manchester United signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan in 2023, hopes were high that he would bring a commanding presence and ball-playing quality to the goalkeeper position.
But despite flashes of brilliance, the Cameroonian international came under intense scrutiny following a season of inconsistency that contributed to United’s worst-ever Premier League finish.
With United set to compete on multiple fronts but missing out on Champions League football, the pressure to upgrade in goal is growing.
Especially if Onana struggles in the opening weeks.
It explains why links have persisted with Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma throughout the summer.
Initial news of United being interested in the top-class keeper circulated in June.
Not long after, the Italian himself discussed the possibility of moving away from PSG.
And as stated by The Mirror’s report, Donnarumma is open to joining the Red Devils this summer.

The Italy captain, who made 47 appearances last season and helped PSG win a historic treble including the Champions League, is under contract until 2026.
However, he has yet to agree to an extension.
PSG are close to finalising a €40m (£35m) deal for Lille’s 23-year-old Lucas Chevalier – a move that could open the door for Donnarumma’s exit.
Mirror’s report states that United have formally registered their interest in the 26-year-old.
As well as the fact that Donnarumma is intrigued by the prospect of a move to Old Trafford.
Even despite the club’s current position outside the Champions League.
While sources close to United admit a deal would be “very difficult” right now, it’s believed that the situation could change quickly depending on PSG’s plans.
United fans would certainly be shocked if Donnarumma departs PSG for United, a side who will be without Champions League next season.
It would be a huge statement of belief in the club from the Italian should he join this summer.
Although no concrete moves have been made yet – Donnarumma’s stance is one worth keeping an eye on.
