Manchester United’s summer business is far from over, and midfield recruitment is expected to be the next focus after securing attacking reinforcements.
Ruben Amorim’s arrival has already brought tactical shifts at Carrington, with the club actively searching for the perfect blend of youth, athleticism, and experience in the centre of the park.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has emerged as one of the most talked-about names in the market, with United exploring creative ways to make a deal happen.
Carlos Baleba, valued at a staggering £87 million (€100 million) by Brighton, has been on the radar of several top clubs thanks to his dynamic style and ability to win possession high up the pitch.
United’s interest has sparked rumours of potential player-plus-cash deals to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.
Given the fees involved, speculation was inevitable that the Reds might use a promising young talent as a sweetener.
However, the Manchester Evening News reports have confirmed one thing beyond doubt – Toby Collyer will not be part of any swap deal.
The 21-year-old midfielder, who joined United in 2022 after progressing through Brighton’s academy, is not being considered as a makeweight in negotiations for Baleba.
The club sees Collyer as a highly promising prospect for the future, and Amorim is believed to be keen to monitor his development closely.
United were reportedly “surprised” when the chance to sign Collyer arose, but they moved quickly to snap up a player regarded as one of the best in his age group nationwide.
Born in Worthing, just 10 miles from Brighton, Collyer was once on course to break into the Seagulls’ first team before being released.
His future this summer is yet to be decided, with loan interest and even potential permanent offers on the table.
Speaking during United’s pre-season tour in the USA, Collyer said: “I think first and foremost I want to be here and play as many games for Man United as possible… I’ll sit down with the manager and higher-ups and see what’s the best solution for that.”
For now, though, United’s midfield jigsaw will not be solved at the expense of one of their brightest young stars.
