Manchester United’s academy continues to produce a steady stream of talent – some destined for Old Trafford, others carving out strong careers elsewhere.

Dan Gore, one of several talents, who recently joined Rotherham United on loan.

Another example being Manni Norkett – the former United academy graduate who now finds himself playing for Boston United.

Another one of those to come through the system over the past decade was Jacob Carney.

A goalkeeper who spent the 2018/19 season with United’s U18 side, making seven appearances.

The following campaign saw his opportunities limited.

He managed just one outing before departing the club for Sunderland in search of regular minutes.

His journey has since taken him through the English non-league system, to Spain with Castellon.

Most recently to Newport County in EFL League Two.

Now, as confirmed by Glenavon FC via their official website, Carney has signed for the Lurgan Blues following his release from Newport.

The move marks a return to familiar territory for the 24-year-old, who previously played in the Irish League while on loan at Portadown from United back in 2021.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Carney brings with him not only shot-stopping ability but also confidence in possession.

A key factor in manager Paddy McLaughlin’s decision to bring him in.

“It was clear to see Jacob’s quality when he played in the league before,” McLaughlin said.

“He was one of the best in the division.”

Carney also spoke positively about the league’s physicality and unpredictability, adding: “Every game is different and gives you something to look forward to.”

With strong competition for places and a fresh opportunity ahead, Carney will be hoping Glenavon provides the platform to reignite his career.

Glenavon have had previous relations with United – Christopher Atherton, back in 2023, joined United from Glenavon on a trial basis.
