David de Gea is widely regarded as a true Manchester United stalwart.
A loyal stalwart who stood between the posts for over a decade and earned legend status among the Old Trafford faithful.
His departure in 2023 marked the end of an era, with De Gea having won multiple individual accolades, including four Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards.
United moved swiftly to replace him with Andre Onana.
A goalkeeper more aligned with the modern game, especially in terms of distribution and playing out from the back.
But Onana’s struggles since his arrival has led many fans to reminisce over De Gea’s consistency and iconic performances in red.
Now, ahead of De Gea’s return to Old Trafford this Saturday, club captain Bruno Fernandes has broken his silence – sending the Spaniard a heartfelt but cheeky message.
“I hope you enjoy being back at Old Trafford.
“To see your fans, see your house, see your home,” Fernandes said via Manchester United on X.
“At the same time, I hope I score some goals against you.”
De Gea will be back at the Theatre of Dreams as Fiorentina’s No.1, with the Serie A side set to face United in their final pre-season fixture before the new campaign begins.
It will be the 34-year-old’s first appearance at Old Trafford since leaving nearly two years ago.
After a year away from football, he signed for Fiorentina last August and impressed in his debut season, keeping 11 clean sheets in 42 games.
De Gea was in fact, rumoured to be signing for United second time round.
However that saga was quickly put to bed in April.
De Gea himself posted a message on social media on Tuesday, sharing his excitement ahead of the clash.
It certainly promises to be an emotional reunion for fans and players alike.
This one’s for you, @D_DeGea 😉❤️
