Manchester United’s summer window continues to be defined as much by its near-misses as its completed deals.

While the club successfully wrapped up moves for Matheus Cunha and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, a number of priority targets have instead headed elsewhere.

Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike, and Viktor Gyokeres all turned down moves to Old Trafford in favour of clubs offering more stability and higher projection.

It’s a recurring theme in a window that was supposed to be the start of a bold new era under Ruben Amorim.

The midfield area in particular, proving especially tricky to reinforce.

Following Christian Eriksen’s exit, United’s recruitment team had identified Joao Palhinha as an ideal candidate for Amorim’s preferred setup.

A powerful, ball-winning presence with Premier League experience.

Spurs, however, were also strongly in the mix.

They surged ahead in the race by securing personal terms and negotiating directly with Bayern Munich for a loan deal.

Now, in a move confirmed via Tottenham Hotspur’s official club website, Palhinha has officially signed on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and a work permit.

The deal includes an option to make the transfer permanent next summer.

Thus, offering Spurs flexibility while locking in a top-level defensive midfielder.

Palhinha, 30, has enjoyed a decorated career with Sporting CP, Fulham, and Bayern.

He was part of the Portugal squad that lifted the UEFA Nations League and featured in three major tournaments.

He was also named Fulham’s Player of the Season in 2022/23 and topped the Premier League for tackles made during his two-year spell at Craven Cottage.

Despite his Bundesliga title with Bayern, a return to England had been on the cards.

And Spurs have now beaten United to a midfielder they’ve admired for over a year.
