Manchester United’s focus remains on outgoings this summer, with several academy graduates already sealing permanent moves away from Old Trafford.

Following the likes Alvaro Fernandez, more familiar faces from United’s youth setup are now forging their own paths across Europe.

As part of Ruben Amorim’s wider restructuring efforts, the club has remained firm on its plans to streamline the youth squad, particularly in the attacking department.

While the spotlight has been on potential incomings, such as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the departure of a lesser-known figure has caught attention in Spain.

A former United forward has now spoken out after completing his latest transfer to a European side aiming to climb the ranks.

Mateo Mejia has officially joined Spanish second-tier side Burgos CF, as per their official club website, for the 2025/26 season and was presented alongside other new signings at El Plantio.

The 22-year-old Colombian-Spanish attacker spent more than four years with Manchester United, joining from Real Zaragoza in 2019.

Speaking at his unveiling, Mejia said: “Last year I had the opportunity to make my debut in the First Division with Sevilla FC, and this year I knew I wanted to play for a professional team.

“Finally, destiny has brought me here, and I’m going to give everything for this shirt and this badge.”

After moving to Sevilla in January 2024, Mateo Mejia made limited appearances in the top flight but gained vital experience before securing his latest opportunity.

“I’m young and 22 years old.

“I’m making my debut in this category, and it’s a real challenge.

“I feel responsible for the opportunity the club has given me, and I hope everything goes well.

“I’m really looking forward to this,” he added.

Mejia describes himself as “a fast forward, with directness and a goal-scoring ability,” and hopes to bring those traits to the Segunda División.

“In football, there are streaks, and sometimes it goes in and other times it doesn’t.

“I think I have a lot to give to the club and that I’ll be able to bring out the best in myself,” he concluded.

During his time with United’s Under-21s, Mejia registered memorable goals against Arsenal and Leicester in the 2022/23 campaign, despite an injury-hit stint.

His journey is a reminder of the club’s rich academy roots and how ex-Reds continue to pursue top-level football away from Carrington.
