Toby Collyer has long been considered one of the most intelligent and tenacious young midfielders in Manchester United’s ranks.

Initially signed from Brighton in 2022, Collyer quickly earned a reputation for his reading of the game, energy, and composure under pressure.

His skill set fits neatly into Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system.

Particularly as one of the double pivots or even as a pressing playmaker in the advanced midfield line.

Against Leeds last week, Amorim trialled him in a more offensive role – starting behind the striker.

A role which helped show off his tactical versatility and willingness to adapt.

Despite those positives, Manchester United have now decided Collyer will leave on loan this summer, according to Manchester Evening News’ report.

The 21-year-old made his senior debut in the Community Shield against Manchester City last year but has started just three times since.

Injuries disrupted his momentum last season, sidelining him for 28 games and limiting him to just 13 appearances.

Still, United remain convinced of his long-term potential and see a loan as essential to ensure regular minutes and development.

Collyer himself, via MEN’s report, admitted, “I’ll sit down with the manager and higher-ups and see what’s the best solution.

“Obviously there’s not a lot of time in football.

“You need to get the results and get the team progressing.”

The academy graduate is under contract until 2027, with an option for a further year, and had interest from Chelsea and Brentford before initially joining the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS project is built around sustainable squad building.

There is a strong focus on youth development and giving academy prospects the chance to grow in competitive environments.

Collyer’s potential loan fits that vision.

Stability, experience, and a clearer path to becoming a long-term asset at Old Trafford.
