Manchester United’s need for a prolific striker remains the club’s top priority in the transfer market, with pre-season now in full swing under manager Ruben Amorim.
Despite the arrivals of several youngsters for assessment and some early exits being confirmed, United’s hunt for a reliable No.9 has intensified.
Following Rasmus Hojlund’s inconsistent last campaign and Marcus Rashford’s departure on loan to Barcelona, Amorim is keen to bring in a seasoned Premier League forward to lead the line.
While the club continues to assess several names, including players from abroad, the desire to land a homegrown, proven talent has shaped their approach in recent weeks.
Now, Manchester United have turned their attention to Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who has become one of the most consistent forwards in the league over the past two seasons.
United made a fresh enquiry regarding Watkins’ availability, viewing him as a prime target to fill the No.9 role due to his experience, form, and ability to lead the line effectively.
However, Villa have responded firmly by stating that Ollie Watkins is not for sale at any price this summer, as per The Telegraph.
The Birmingham-based club considers the England international to be a core part of Unai Emery’s project, and despite previous interest from Arsenal in January, their stance hasn’t shifted.
Watkins, who joined Villa for £33 million, is under a long-term contract and remains integral to their plans both domestically and in Europe.
Manchester United’s interest in Villa assets doesn’t stop there, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also discussed internally.
United reportedly made a surprise loan offer for the Argentine World Cup winner, which was instantly rejected.
Villa would only consider a permanent deal for Martinez, but only if their valuation of around £40 million is met.
Villa are currently in the United States for their pre-season tour, where they’ll face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
They open their Premier League campaign against Newcastle on 16 August.
