Former Manchester United and Spain goalkeeper David De Gea is a United icon thanks to his 12 years at the club, being a rock between the sticks.
Having come through the Atletico Madrid academy, De Gea moved to Manchester in 2011 for £21.7 million, moving to Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The then-20-year-old instantly asserted himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, starting his run of 545 games for The Red Devils.

During these 12 years, De Gea kept a truly impressive 190 clean sheets, only conceding 590 goals, averaging at just over one goal conceded per game.
As such a rock in defence, the former Spain international helped the Red Devils to with their most recent Premier League title, back in 2012/13, as well as a Europa League trophy, two Carabao Cup, the FA Cup and three Community Shields.
Then in 2023, Erik ten Hag made the decision to part ways with David De Gea, seeing him leave the club at the end of his contract, leaving him clubless and replacing him with Andre Onana, which hasn’t necessarily gone to plan.
De Gea spent just over a year out of football, coming to terms with his departure from Old Trafford, before signing a new contract with Fiorentina, where he still plays, lighting up Serie A.

Last season the 34-year-old managed 11 clean sheets in 42 games, only conceding 50 goals, showing he’s still got it.
However, an interview with Cronache di spogliatoio on YouTube has now revealed that De Gea almost ended up joining Real Madrid.
Whilst few details are revealed, the goalkeeper commented: “My failed transfer to Real Madrid? At the end of my career, I will talk about what happened.”
He continued: “In the end, it didn’t happen and I think some things happen for a reason: I stayed in Manchester and I was happy.”
Now, De Gea is headed back to Old Trafford next month, as Manchester United host Fiorentina in their final match of the pre-season.
