Manchester United’s pre-season preparations have taken a frustrating turn following the injury setback to first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Cameroonian was initially expected to miss around six weeks due to a hamstring issue, however, it has now come to light that the injury is a strain rather than a tear, which means his recovery is progressing well.

With the Premier League campaign drawing nearer, the need for additional depth between the posts has quickly become a pressing concern.

United’s transfer team, led by new sporting director Jason Wilcox, are actively scanning the market for a goalkeeper who can step in immediately if required.

Now, talkSPORT reports that the club are ready to step up their interest in Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens.

The 23-year-old Belgian under-21 international has long been on United’s radar and is now emerging as a serious option in light of Onana’s absence.

Antwerp are believed to value the highly rated stopper at around £17 million, with United considering their next move.

Senne Lammens himself has already reacted to the speculation earlier this year when United’s interest first surfaced.

Speaking to Belgian media in February, the goalkeeper admitted the links caught him by surprise: “The first time I heard it, I thought: ‘wow’, immediately a world team that follows you. That is special.”

He continued: “Of course, I was also asked about it a lot, and when I made a save in training.

“Those top clubs have so many scouts and follow so many players.

“So it doesn’t have to mean anything yet. It will only become clear in the summer whether anything will come of it.

“But of course, it is only positive.”

“Especially because it is about the best competition in the world and my profile – my stature and way of playing – is suitable for English football.

“You have to physically hold your own there, and that suits me.”

“I do follow the teams that follow you a bit.

“But it’s not like I’m watching full matches. Summaries are enough.”

Lammens is no stranger to big moments either—he famously scored a dramatic 95th-minute header against Real Madrid for Club Brugge in the UEFA Youth League back in 2019 to seal a 2-2 draw.

As United weigh their next steps in the market, the towering Belgian may be one to watch in the coming days.
