Real Madrid fans have something to get excited about as they’re on the brink of signing Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras.

Los Blancos have been prioritising the move, for the 22-year-old to move to the Spanish capital, becoming a key part of Xabi Alonso’s back line.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold coming in as the new right-back and Carreras on the left, Madrid are entering a new era for their defence.

Fabrizio Romano has given his iconic “here we go” to the move, saying it would progress further after the Club World Cup.

Now, with PSG knocking the LaLiga giants out of the competition, Alonso’s side can focus on signing their man.

Carreras’ move to the Spanish capital has seemed inevitable for some time now, but with Madrid’s season finally over, the club can shift their focus from the pitch to recruitment, and therefore, finalising the deal for the left-back.

Recent talks between the two clubs have led to Rafael Obrador heading to Benfica, with queries over if the move was as part of the Carreras deal, however it appears that the two moves are being considered separately.

Romano has revealed that the move will cost Madrid £43 million (€50 million), seeing Manchester United earn around £7.5 million on the sell-on clause of 20% of the profits or around £8.6 million if the 20% clause is applied to the full fee.

The only hold-up now is seeing if United are planning on activating their buy back clause, which recent reports have indicated they have no intention of doing.

As such, it’s expected that Alvaro Carreras will be headed to Madrid for his medical in the coming days to officially join the Spanish giants.
