Why Ruben Amorim needs these two potential signings to succeed

Why is recruiting a wing back so crucial in enabling Ruben Amorim to implement his system at Manchester United this summer?

Manchester United and Ruben Amorim will be under intense pressure to deliver results quickly next season.

After a 15th-place finish, failure to make significant progress would almost certainly trigger questions about the club’s direction yet again.

That makes this summer’s transfer window one of the most important in the club’s modern history.

United have already completed the signing of Matheus Cunha and are close to agreeing a deal for Bryan Mbeumo – two attacking players expected to slot into the number 10 roles that are central to Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

Crucially, Amorim has made it clear he will not stray from his tactical identity.

Therefore, success hinges on having the right personnel to execute his highly structured style

The club continues to explore additions in goal, midfield, up front, and at wing-back – if the right players are sold.

But arguably no position is more vital to Amorim’s system than the wing-backs.

United currently have options on the right in Amad Diallo, Diogo Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui.

However, Amad is a natural winger, and both Dalot and Mazraoui are full-backs by trade.

While Amad is expected to start at right wing-back, adding a natural wing-back as depth would be a sensible move.

On the left, the issue is more pressing.

January signing Patrick Dorgu is a promising talent, but at just 20, he’s still raw.

His only competition is 18-year-old Harry Amass, another exciting prospect who lacks top-level experience.

In a formation that relies so heavily on wing-backs United may struggle unless they add a more seasoned option on the left.

So, who could United bring in – and why are these signings so crucial for Ruben Amorim’s success at Old Trafford?

Wing Back Options

Pervis Estupinan has emerged as an option.

The Brighton defender is reportedly interested in a move to Manchester United, and at 27, he’s entering his peak years.

Crucially, Estupinan has Premier League experience, is a natural wing-back, and possesses the attacking instincts needed to thrive in Amorim’s system.

His energy, directness, and ability to progress the ball down the flank would not only suit the 3-4-3 shape, but also give Patrick Dorgu an ideal role model to develop under.

Another name under consideration is Tyrick Mitchell.

The former Crystal Palace defender is also Premier League-proven, younger, and athletic.

While Mitchell doesn’t offer much in terms of final product, his pace and defensive solidity make him a reliable option.

With his contract now expired, he could be signed on a free transfer – making him a low-risk addition and providing further depth on the left.

On the right, Manchester United are less likely to make a signing unless significant funds are freed up.

However, one name that has been monitored is Roger Fernandes.

The 18-year-old Braga wing-back is highly rated, and with Amorim’s familiarity from the Portuguese league.

United could move for him later in the window if budget allows.

Depth and Versatility

One of the biggest advantages of adding another left wing-back this summer is the depth and tactical flexibility it would provide.

Wing-back is a high-intensity position in Amorim’s 3-4-3, requiring relentless running, recovery pace, and attacking contribution.

Having multiple reliable options in that role will allow Amorim to rotate when needed.

Importantly, it would also take the pressure off Patrick Dorgu.

The 20-year-old is clearly talented, but expecting him to perform consistently at the highest level in such a demanding system is risky.

Bringing in an experienced alternative – like Estupinan or Mitchell – would give Dorgu the breathing room to grow and develop without being thrown into the deep end every week.

Adding variety in profile also gives Amorim more tools to work with tactically.

One of the criticisms of him is a lack of fluidity and flexibility.

Introducing different types of wing-backs – some more attacking, others more defensive or physical, would allow him to adapt based on the opponent or game state.

For example, being able to bring on a defensively strong, physically dominant left wing-back late in games could help United see out results more effectively and turn dropped points into wins.

Manchester United still have plenty of work to do this summer.

With much of their business hinges on outgoing transfers to free up funds.

But if sales are made, the wing-back positions – particularly on the left are crucial areas to upgrade.

For Ruben Amorim to succeed and implement his demanding system effectively, the squad must be built to support it.

That starts with ensuring the right depth and profiles in one of the system’s most important positions.
