Manchester United have been preparing for a significant summer rebuild after narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification, following a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

The result added pressure to reshape the squad, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe keen to inject fresh quality and balance into the side.

Matheus Cunha’s arrival from Wolves has already kicked off the summer business.

While Bryan Mbeumo is expected to follow, giving United’s frontline a much-needed boost.

However, in order to comply with financial regulations and sustain investment in new talent, several outgoings are also expected across the board.

Not just huge for the men’s team, but also the women’s team too.

As part of that process, Manchester United have officially confirmed the departures of Aoife Mannion and Alyssa Aherne, with both players leaving following the expiry of their contracts.

The club revealed the news via its official website, thanking the pair for their service and contributions across different stages of their careers.

Mannion joined United from Manchester City in 2021, making 55 appearances and overcoming a serious knee injury during her first campaign.

She returned to action in February 2023 and became a Republic of Ireland international that same month.

The centre-back played a key role in United’s historic FA Cup win at Wembley, featuring in the final moments of the 4-0 victory over Spurs.

It was the club’s first major silverware since reforming the women’s team in 2018.

Aherne, meanwhile, rose through United’s women’s academy ranks and signed her first professional contract in 2023.

She became the 21st graduate of the club’s youth system to step up to the senior squad.

After a loan spell with Everton and a productive stint at Sheffield United in the Championship – where she scored on her debut – the 21-year-old now departs to pursue the next chapter of her career.

The club wishes both Aoife and Alyssa the very best for the future, as preparations for the 2025/26 season continue.
